Editorial — ChitownCrimechasers-CCC Another Deadly Night on the South Side: When Will It End? 76th & Halsted Mass Shooting 4 PPL SHOT, 2 KILLED
Early Wednesday morning, four people were shot — two of them fatally — just a block from the Chicago Police Department’s 6th District station on 76th and Halsted. The proximity is hard to ignore. A mass shooting unfolding within sight of a police station speaks to how brazen, and how frequent, this kind of violence has become in our city.
According to CPD, officers responded around 12:23 a.m. to reports of multiple people shot at a BP gas station. What they found when they arrived was devastating: four gunshot victims, all standing outside when four unknown offenders approached and opened fire before fleeing on foot.
A 53-year-old woman, shot in the head, was pronounced dead. A 46-year-old man, shot multiple times in the body, also died at the scene. Two more victims — a 35-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man — remain in critical condition after being struck multiple times.
No suspects are in custody. Area 2 Detectives are investigating, and anyone with information is urged to contact CPDTIP.com to remain anonymous.

A Pattern We Can’t Ignore
This shooting is not an isolated event — it’s part of a pattern that has repeated itself across Chicago’s South and West Sides for years. Gas stations, corner stores, and sidewalks have become flashpoints for violence that often leaves bystanders and residents with more questions than answers. When shootings like this occur steps from a police station, it raises uncomfortable but necessary questions about visibility, deterrence, and what more can be done — not just by law enforcement, but by the community as a whole.
Behind every statistic is a name, a family, and a neighborhood left to grieve. The victims here were simply standing outside — going about an ordinary night — when violence found them.
