DEARBORN, Michigan — A shooting at Fairlane Town Center left two people dead and one injured Friday afternoon, sending shoppers and employees fleeing the popular shopping mall near Evergreen Road and Michigan Avenue.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. on July 3, 2026, at the mall located at 18900 Michigan Avenue. Dearborn Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire inside the shopping center, triggering an immediate evacuation and large police presence.
Victims and Casualties
Two people were killed, and a third was injured in the shooting. One person died at the scene, and a second victim died after being taken to a local hospital. A third person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The victims ranged in age from their late teens to early 20s, according to police.
One victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while another was shot in the abdomen. Police also confirmed that a person fleeing the shooting was struck by a vehicle in the mall’s parking lot.
The identities of the victims have not been released pending family notification.

What Led to the Shooting
Police said the shooting began as a dispute between two groups that escalated into gunfire, and investigators believe all three victims were involved in the incident.
Police say both parties involved brought handguns to the mall and that this was not a random act of violence. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated, “It was between two parties that knew each other here at the mall, and a fight began that escalated in gunfire. It appears that both parties had firearms”.
An employee working at a business inside Fairlane Town Center told authorities she heard at least four shots fired during the altercation.
Police Investigation and Response
Dearborn police responded to reports of gunfire on Friday (July 3) around 1:25 p.m. at the mall near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road. Police said several people from both groups were detained at the police station for questioning, though no formal arrests have been announced.
Police Chief Shahin noted that law enforcement has not yet released suspect information, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Mall Closure and Public Safety
Fairlane Town Center remained closed for several hours Friday while detectives processed the scene. The mall’s temporary closure allowed police to investigate the shooting and preserve evidence.
Police say there are no additional threats to the public. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin emphasized: “The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. Shootings and other acts of violence are entirely unacceptable, and we will hold everyone involved fully accountable”.
Community Response
The shooting at one of the region’s major shopping destinations has raised concerns about public safety in commercial spaces. Chief Shahin stated: “The idea that it would happen in a public space, a mall where people are shopping, is unconscionable”.

Shoppers and mall employees described scenes of panic and chaos as gunfire erupted inside the busy shopping center. Many sought immediate shelter or rushed to evacuate the building.
